Director Biography - Anna Gabriella Agosto

Anna Gabriella Agosto grew up in a Puerto Rican household in Grand Prairie, TX, and Tucson, AZ. She began her college career as an engineering student but quickly realized that her true passion lay with filmmaking. During her time as a student, she was involved in multiple films made by her classmates while also writing, directing and occasionally starring in her own films. On graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in Film & Television Production, Anna is now pursuing her passion for directing. She has been working alongside award-winning filmmaker Lisa Molomot on a feature documentary and accompanying short documentaries about the history of Tucson and an archaeological project taking place in the city. Some of her work with Molomot is available to view on PBS (https://tv.azpm.org/p/eps/2024/6/2/220461-highlighting-local-documentary-filmmakers/).

Director Statement

The film is set in a small American neighborhood where a young Latina girl, Lulu, receives a new pair of light-up sneakers she has always dreamed of having. These shoes give her a new wave of confidence that she wants to share with her entire neighborhood. Believing she is the best in the block, she shows off her sneakers and faces another girl with the same shoes. They engage in a battle for the best girl with the new shoes. Lulu learns that being the best is not worth it if it means that she doesn’t care about others.

This story has been greatly influenced by my childhood. My parents would paint a big picture of enthusiasm for even the slightest events like getting a new pair of shoes. They would describe how the shoes would make me run faster or jump higher, making me feel like a brand-new person who could do anything. Lulu shares this excitement, leading her down a journey of self-acknowledgment.

My short film bottles the essence of childhood. It encapsulates the wonderment of being a child and seeing the world through fresh eyes. Latina/o representation is also significant to my film. Communicating the stories of a young Latina girl growing up in the States is an integral part of the narrative that I want to share.
